5 Top DJ Tips For Beginners
DJ Tips for Beginners – by Devious Soul
Back in the day, when dinosaurs roaming the land, all DJs needed to land a set were serious skills, a bunch of great records and a decent demo tape to wow promoters into booking them. How times have changed, thanks in no small part to the internet and the changes to modern technology.
So how do you make it to the top these days? Bringing a bunch of friends with you certainly helps, though any promoter who’s booking you due to your ticket count is probably not taking you too seriously. Here are a few DJ tips to help your transition from the bedroom to the booth.
Learn Your Craft
Being able to use a wide variety of DJing equipment will stand you in good stead in the long run, because if your laptop goes down, you’re going to have to be able to instantly react. Or go home. That will look good. In LA we offer a wide range of DJ courses that can show you around vinyl turntables, CDJs and Traktor to ensure that you are competent on all of the formats you will find in most nightclubs.
Be True to Yourself
Do you love the music you play? Are you putting your heart and soul out there for the floor to see? If the answer is yes, then you are on the right track. You will need to persevere with a few knock-backs along the way, but being original is the perfect way to stand out and make people take notice. Just playing the latest Beatport top ten is unoriginal and totally uninspiring.
Aim for the Stars. Avoid the Gutter
Only 1% of the world’s DJs are playing at Pacha, so be prepared for a lot of hard work and dedication. Every small gig can lead to bigger things as you never know who’s listening. Even that 1% started playing in tiny backrooms and friend’s parties, so be sure to make even the smallest opportunities count.
If you think you have what it takes, why not promote your own party? DJs who had their own specific ideas of how they wanted their evening to be curated start a lot of successful nights. If you think you’ve got the crowd, the right venue and the skills to pay the bills, why not go for it?
Let’s face facts, anyone with a laptop, a piece of DJ software and an Ed Hardy cap can call themselves a DJ these, but what separates the men from the boys, or the women from the girls? Production skills – most producers have to take up DJing to make money these days, and the same works on the flip side for DJs. If you can produce a top dance floor anthem then the bookings will come flooding in, plus your fees will increase dramatically.
