SRT 101: Music Business I

Syllabus

 

Course Overview:

An in-depth look at the present state of the music industry. Topics include record labels, music publishing, professional songwriting, music demos, entertainment attorneys, copyright law, artist management, music piracy, touring and the challenges facing the industry and artists.

 

Students will receive a general overview of the modern day music business and gain a clear and concise view of the inner workings of the industry.

 

Attendance / Participation:

-Attendance is mandatory (after 3 absences, grades will be affected).

-Being prompt and on time is encouraged.

-Participation directly affects students grade. Questions and comments are encouraged!

 

Testing / Grading:

-There will be several assignments and two exams: a midterm and final. All assignments and tests will be graded out of 100.

-Assignments are to be submitted in class and on time.

-Any late assignments will receive a 10-point deduction for every class not submitted.

-If you are absent, you are required to hand in any missed assignments the day you return to class.

 

Required Texts:

-Music Business Handbook And Career Guide (Ed. 10 or 11) – David Bakersville

-The Musician’s Business And Legal Guide – Mark Halloran

 

Final Thoughts:

Having worked on all sides of the music industry, my goal is to educate you to the best of my ability and to prepare you for your career ahead. While the textbooks will be utilized, a large portion of the information presented will be from my personal experience and other sources.
